A.4. Installing Turbolinux 10 Server Over a Network

If your computer is on a LAN, and another machine on the LAN has a copy of Turbolinux 10 Server exported via NFS (Network File System) or available from an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server (perhaps created via the process described above), you may use this machine as an NFS or FTP server from which to install Turbolinux.

You will need to obtain proper TCP/IP and NFS/FTP server settings from your system or network administrator. If you select this this option, you will immediately be presented with a dialog box requesting networking information. Enter the information obtained from your system or network administrator and as explained in Section 1.2.

Caution

Unfortunately, the Turbolinux installer does not currently support the use of dial-up network connections during installation, so you cannot use the NFS or FTP install methods over a modem or other dial-up network adapter.

A.4.1. To install Turbolinux 10 Server over a network:

  1. Insert the boot floppy containing boot.img, as described in Section A.2.

  2. Turn on your computer or press its reset button.

  3. You will see the following boot prompt; please wait a few moments while the installer initializes.

To install via FTP, you will need to input "ftp" as an install option at the boot prompt. To install via NFS, no special options are required. Press the [Enter] key.

    Caution

At the boot screen, you may modify the default installer settings and boot options. If necessary, you may add appropriate boot options in the "boot options" field at the bottom of this screen. This may be useful if your machine has problems with the standard installation procedures. For details, please refer to Appendix B.

  4. Momentarily, the screen will display "Please insert module disk 1; then press a key to continue." Insert the system install disk ("normal.img" or "pcmcia.img") which you created earlier and then press the [Enter] key.

  5. Choose a Language

Using the arrow keys, select the language to be used during the Turbolinux 10 Server installation process. Use the Tab key to highlight the OK button and press [ENTER] to select it.

Depending upon the hardware installed in your system, there may be a short delay while Turbolinux loads the installer.

  6. Select your keyboard's configuration

Select your keyboard's language layout from the list.

Keyboard keys are mapped to different characters in different languages and the mapping of keys to characters is a function of software (it is not necessarily related to the letters printed on the keys). For example, the first six letters on a US (United States) keyboard are QWERTY. However, the first six characters on a German keyboard are QWERTZ. Your selection here should reflect the language of the user normally using the machine.

Press [TAB] until the OK button is highlighted and then press [ENTER], or simply press [F12], to move to the next screen.

  7. Select an installation method

For a network installation, you may select either NFS or FTP as the installation method and press [ENTER].

  8. At the Configure TCP/IP window, select BOOTP/DHCP if the machine on which Turbolinux 10 Server is being installed obtains its network information from a server.

  9. If the machine's network settings are configured statically (that is, they are not acquired from a BOOTP or DHCP server), specify the IP Address, Netmask, Default Gateway, and Primary Nameserver in the fields provided.

For more information on network settings, please refer to Section 1.2.2.

A.4.1.1. Continuing with NFS

The NFS Setup window allows you to configure your NFS mount.

  1. Enter the NFS Server Name

This can be an IP address or a Fully Qualified Domain Name. You may use an FQDN if you are certain that DNS is functioning correctly and the server's name will be properly resolved to an IP address; a simple hostname will do if the install machine's DNS domain is the same as the NFS server's.

  2. Enter the install directory

This is the remote share path to the root of the Install CD-ROM images (likely related to the target path of the installation directory created above).

A.4.1.2. Continuing with FTP

The FTP Setup window allows you to configure your FTP connection.

  1. Enter the FTP Site/Server Name

This can be an IP address or a Fully Qualified Domain Name. You may use an FQDN if you are certain that DNS is functioning correctly and the server's name will be properly resolved to an IP address; a simple hostname will do if the install machine's DNS domain is the same as the FTP server's.

  2. Enter the install directory

This is the remote share path to the root of the Install CD-ROM images.

  3. If you wish to use a non-anonymous FTP connection for installation, use the space bar to select the brackets labeled "Use non-anonymous FTP".

  4. Select OK to continue to Further FTP setup.

  5. Enter the login information.

Fill in the login user name and password required for the FTP session. If you did not select "Use non-anonymous FTP" and the FTP server to which you are connecting is properly configured to receive anonymous FTP connections, this screen will not be displayed.

Use of installations via FTP are limited to the text-based installation method.
