This chapter covers the installation of Turbolinux 10 Server using a graphical interface from a bootable CD-ROM drive.
For information on installing from a bootable floppy drive or installing via your network, see Appendix A
If you do not have at least 64 MB of memory on your system, the installer may not be able to launch the GUI installation. In this case, the installer will continue as if you had selected text as your preferred installation interface. The text-based installer will also launch if the video card in your system is incapable of using the X Window System.
![]() | Are you installing on a machine with data already stored on your hard disk? If so, you should make a backup now. Murphy's law holds true in computing: you will need a file on that hard drive just after it has been accidentally deleted. |
Insert the Turbolinux 10 Server Install CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Turn on the power to the computer, or press Restart so your machine boots from the Install CD.
You will see the following boot screen after the Install CD loads.
![]() | In order for your computer to boot from the CD-ROM, you may need to change your BIOS settings. The [Delete] or [F1] key is often used to access your BIOS settings just after turning your computer on (or just after resetting it). |
You will need to wait for the installer to begin. On the left side of the screen you will see a bar indicating the amount of time remaining before the default selection is booted automatically. On the right side of the screen you will see the boot menu with "install" designated as the default for the installation. "install" is the most common boot menu item; it executes the standard GUI installer. To use it, you will simply need to push [Enter] (or take no action) and the installer will begin.
![]() | Turbolinux 10 Server also has a text-based installer, which can be used instead of the GUI installer. To start the text-based installer, you should select "text" at the boot menu. |
![]() | At the boot screen, you can change the default installer settings and update the boot options. If necessary, you may add appropriate boot options in the "boot options" field at the bottom of this screen. This may be useful if you have problems with the normal installation procedures. For details, please refer to Appendix B. |
![]() | Turbolinux 10 Server offers two boot modes when booting from the CD-ROM. The first is "native" mode and the other is "emulation" mode. In most cases Install CD 1 will boot in native mode but there are occasional instances in which some hardware will not boot Install CD 1 correctly. If this should happen, boot from Install CD 2 in emulation mode. |
