2.8. Boot Loader Configuration

The Boot Loader Configuration screens (Figure 2.15 and Figure 2.16), allow you to configure a boot loader to load Turbolinux at boot. The Turbolinux boot loader (GRUB) is also capable of booting non-Linux operating systems.

2.8.1. To configure your boot loader

  1. Check the box marked Create Boot Disk if you are not installing the boot loader on the Master Boot Record (MBR), or if you are not installing a boot loader at all.

    Caution

If you do not check Create Boot Disk here, you will not be prompted to create a boot disk later in the installation. No matter which boot loader option you choose, it is recommended that you create a boot disk.

  2. You may choose not to check "Install Boot Loader" if you do not wish to have a boot loader written to your drive.

If you have two separate hard drives with a different operating system on each one, you may prefer to use a boot disk rather than GRUB.

  3. Select "Install Boot Loader" on Master Boot Record if Turbolinux will be the only operating system bootable on your system, or if you wish to use GRUB to boot all other operating systems installed on your machine.

  4. Choose the radio button labeled First Sector of Boot Partition if your system will be booting multiple operating systems (in addition to Turbolinux).

    Caution

If, for any reason, you choose not to install a boot loader or if you choose to install it on the first sector of the boot partition, you should create a boot disk to ensure that you can boot Turbolinux after installation.

The Boot Loader Configuration - Advanced Tab screen (Figure 2.16), allows you to specify any special parameters to pass to the kernel. Normally, however, none will be required.

On the Boot Loader Configuration - Advanced Tab:

  1. Select the box labeled Use Linear Mode or LBA32 mode if your computer requires access to its hard drive in either of these modes. Refer to your hardware's documentation to determine whether linear access mode is required. By default, LBA32 mode is selected.

  2. If your machine cannot access the hard drive in LBR mode, uncheck the box labeled "Use GRUB as the boot loader" and then check the box labeled "Use linear mode".

  3. You should also uncheck the box labeled "Use GRUB as the boot loader" if you would prefer to use LILO as your boot loader.

  4. Enter any required kernel boot parameters.
