1.4. Ensure disk space for installing Turbolinux FUJI

To install Turbolinux FUJI, sufficient free space (5 GB or more is recommended) is required in the hard disk of your computer. The free space in the hard disk in this context is an unused space of the hard disk itself, rather than free space in "C drive" or "D drive" of Windows.

With "Turbo Install" that is introduced in this guide, the installer automatically locates free space in the hard disk and installs Turbolinux FUJI there. If sufficient free space is not found in the hard disk, you have to allocate it manually. Before staring to install Turbolinux FUJI, consider how to ensure the required free space in the hard disk.

In this manual, how to install Turbolinux FUJI in the computer in which Windows has been installed is described. First, check how the hard disk in your computer is used by Windows.

1.4.1. If only C drive is present

If your computer contains only a "C drive", perhaps Windows uses all the space in the hard disk. In this case, you have to delete Windows as shown in the figure below to install Turbolinux FUJI in your computer. Then you install Turbolinux FUJI in the space that has been freed by deleting Windows. You can delete "C drive" using Turbolinux FUJI installer. You can also purchase a commercial partition management tool to do this. If you have deleted the partition used by Windows beforehand, you can easily install Turbolinux FUJI using Turbo Install.

You may want to install Windows and Turbolinux FUJI on the same machine without deleting the existing Windows. In this case, you can ensure the free space by reducing the size of the "C drive" as shown in the following figure.

As shown above, if you install more than one operating system (Windows and Turbolinux FUJI) in the single machine, you will be able to select which operating system to be used when your computer starts up. This is called "dual-boot".

Caution

Turbolinux FUJI does not contain a software to reduce drive size of Windows. So you have to purchase a commercial partition management tool.

1.4.2. If multiple drives are present

If your Windows system has multiple drives such as "C drive" and "D drive", you can install Turbolinux FUJI in the space which has been freed by deleting the "D drive".

You can delete the "D drive" either using Turbolinux FUJI installer or from Windows. If you have deleted the "D drive" on Windows beforehand, Turbo Install will automatically install Turbolinux FUJI in the freed up space without manually having to set the partition.

For example, to delete the "D drive" on Windows XP, follow the steps below.

Caution

If you delete the partition of Windows (such as "C drive" or "D drive"), all the data on that drive are deleted. When you delete the partition or change its size, it is your responsibility to do so including backing up the required data beforehand.

  1. Click "Start Menu" select "My Computer".

  2. Select "Management" from within the "My Computer" window.

  3. From the "Computer Management" screen, select "Storage" from the tree menu on the left-hand side of the screen, and then select "Disk Management".

  4. The drives used by Windows will be displayed. Select "Volume (D:)".

  5. Finally, click the "Delete" button on the tool bar to delete the D: drive.
