1.5. Check how to connect to the Internet

If you have completed installation of Turbolinux FUJI by following the steps as described "Turbo Install" in Chapter 2, the information for connecting to the network is automatically obtained from the DHCP server and set on Turbolinux FUJI. DHCP is a feature to automatically obtain network information such as IP address and DNS server, that are required to connect to the network and to set them on the network interface. When Internet connection via DHCP is available, you can connect Turbolinux FUJI to the Internet just by connecting the terminal equipment such as CATV modem provided by the Internet service provider to the Ethernet cable. If you use an Internet service provider that requires user authentication using PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet) protocol, the following two configurations are typically assumed.

When the broadband router is used

The first one is to connect a broadband router to the ADSL/FTTH modem and then connect your computer to that router. (Some equipment have functions of both the modem and broadband router.)

In this case, PPPoE connection is set on the broadband router side and no PPPoE connection setting is required on the Turbolinux FUJI side. Normally, such broadband router has various functions including not only PPPoE connection capability but also NAT/IP masquarade, DHCP server, switching hub, and firewall setting. You only have to connect your computer to the broadband router using an Ethernet cable to connect the installed Turbolinux FUJI to the Internet.

When your computer is directly connected to the ADSL/FTTH modem

The other configuration is to connect your computer directly to the ADSL modem/FTTH modem.

In this case, PPPoE connection must be configured on the Turbolinux FUJI side. Turbolinux FUJI contains a connection tool for this, but you cannot set it when installing Turbolinux FUJI. The PPPoE connection setting must be configured using a "Configure Network" tool after installation is completed.

Tip

If you want to assign a fixed IP address on the network interface or use dial-up connection or the wireless LAN card, you can set them by using a "Configure Network" tool after installing Turbolinux FUJI. See Chapter 5.
