3.5. File Manager

The file manager (Konqueror) is an high-performance file manager supplied with KDE. The file manager is used to open, copy, move, or delete the file stored in the PC. While Windows Explorer is a well-known file manager used in Windows environment, Konqueror can be operated just like the Windows Explorer. Konqueror also supports drag-and-drop operation so that you can easily perform operations such as copy, delete, move files and folders by using a mouse. In addition, Konqueror has functions of not only operating files and folders but also as an image viewer and Web browser.

3.5.1. Screen organization of the file manager

The file manager (Konqueror) starts by double-clicking (My Documents) or (My Computer) on the desktop.

Menu bar

Use this to access menus to operate the file manager.

Main Toolbar

Frequently used menus such as move the folder, cut, copy, and paste files or folders are registered on this toolbar as icons.

Location Toolbar

Indicates the path of the file or the folder which is displayed on the view. When the file manager is used as a Web browser, the URL of the displayed Web site is indicated.

Bookmark Toolbar

You can register the path of the folder or URL of the Web site displayed on the view as a bookmark, using the file manager. The paths and URLs registered as bookmarks are displayed on this toolbar.

Navigation Panel

The view of the navigation panel can be toggled as shown below by clicking the tab displayed to the left of the navigation panel.

Tip

You can toggle between showing/hiding the navigation panel by either selecting "Window" -> "Show Navigation Panel" from the menu bar or pressing the [F9] key.

Shows the registered bookmarks.

The file manager also has the function as a Web browser. It displays the history of Web sites that have been accessed.

Displays the home folder of the logged-in user in the tree view.

Provides an interface to access resources located on the network (FTP or Web site) just like accessing the local files. By default, it provides connections to the official Web site and FTP site of KDE.

Displays the folder hierarchy from the "/ "folder in the tree view. Various folders are displayed, in which the system file or applications are stored that are required for Turbolinux FUJI to operate. Normally, you do not have to access these folders. Be careful not to delete them by mistake.

Provides an interface to access devices recognized by the system, data file of the music CD, printing system status, and others.

View

A pane where the contents of the folder is displayed. By default, it is displayed in "Icon view" mode, where folders and files are shown in alignment. Other view modes are also available which you can change by selecting "View" -> "View Mode" from the menu.

If you double-click the file displayed on the view, the application that can open that file automatically starts. For example, if a file with an extension .txt is double-clicked, the text editor "KWrite" starts. You can also specify the application to open the file by right-clicking the file.

3.5.2. Accessing CD-ROM/floppy disk/USB

3.5.2.1. Accessing CD-ROM or floppy disk

Insert the CD-ROM or the floppy disk in the drive.

If you double-click this icon (My Computer) and start the file manager, icons to access the file system, CD-ROM, and floppy disk that are recognized by Turbolinux FUJI are displayed.

You can only double-click these icons to access the file or folder located on the device.

To remove the CD-ROM or floppy disk, you must exit the file manager or operate the file manager to move from the folder in the CD-ROM or the floppy disk. For example, click to move to the home folder. You cannot remove the CD-ROM or floppy disk while accessing the folder in them.

TipSubmount
 

Formerly, you must perform mount or unmount operation when using a CD-ROM or floppy disk. In Turbolinux FUJI, a new feature called subfs has been implemented that allows the user to access data in the CD-ROM or the floppy disk without mount or unmount operation. Note that this feature is disabled if you execute unmount or eject operation. To enable the feature again, restart "submount" in the Service settings of the control center. If you want to disable subfs, stop "submount" and uncheck the "Start up" check box.

3.5.2.2. Accessing USB devices

With Turbolinux FUJI, you can use the file manager to easily access data in the external storage connected via USB, such as the USB flash memory, multimedia card reader, or USB hard disk. First, double-click (My Computer) to start the file manager.

Devices that are recognized by Turbolinux FUJI are displayed as icons. In this state, connect your USB device to use. After a while, the icon of the device is automatically displayed in the file manamger view.

You can access the data in the connected USB memory or the like just by double-clicking the displayed icon.

To remove the USB device, use to return to the "My Computer" screen and right-click the icon of the device. Then select "Unmount" from the menu that appears. Now you can safely remove the USB device.

Caution

Do not remove the USB device without unmounting.

3.5.3. Other useful features

Various features as listed below are implemented on the Turbolinux FUJI file manager.

Web browser featureThe file manager can be used as a Web browser. To show the Web page, you only have to specify the URL on the location toolbar such as "http://www.turbolinux.com/."
File compression and extractionThe major archive file formats such as "zip," "tar.gz," and "tar.bz2" are supported. You can confirm the contents of the archived file by double-clicking the file in the file manager. You can also easily compress files and folders using the "Actions" menu displayed when right-clicking the files or folders.
Creating a shared folderYou can instantly publish the folder on the network using the "Share" menu displayed when right-clidking the folder. The shared folder can be accessed from My Network on the Windows system.
Creating an encrypted folderYou can create the encrypted folder to prevent critical data files from illegally being accessed or information in them leaked. All the files created in the encrypted folder or copied to the encrypted folder are protected by encryption. For example, even if you accidentally leave your laptop PC somewhere or it is stolen, data are safe when they are managed with the encrypted folders. To create the encrypted folder, right-click on the view of the file manager and select "Create new encrypted folder" from the menu.
Ripping the music CDYou can save the music CD as an audio file in Ogg Vorbis format. Ogg Vorbis is a sound compression format similar to MP3 and attracts much attention as a promising alternative to MP3.
Creating a network folderYou can register the folder on the network that is frequently accessed as an icon. Network folders of various connection types such as Web folder (WebDAV), FTP, Microsoft Windows shared folder, and Secure Shell (SSH) can be created.
FTP clientYou can access the FTP server from the file manager. Enter the address in the location toolbar such as "ftp://hostname/."
SSH clientYou can access the SSH server from the file manager. Enter the address in the location toolbar such as "fish://hostname/."
