3.3. Description of Desktop

When you log into Turbolinux FUJI, a desktop named KDE (The K Desktop Environment) starts. It provides a highly sophisticated, Windows-like user friendly desktop environment with excellent operability. This section describes main components of this desktop.

3.3.1. Icons on the desktop

When the desktop starts, the following icons are displayed.

Trash

It corresponds to the Recycle Bin (Windows) or Trash Box (MacOS). To move the file or folder to the trash, either select "Move To Trash" from the pop-up menu that appears by right-clicking on the file manager (Konqueror) or drag-and-drop the desired file or folder from the file manager to the "Trash" icon. Files that are moved to the trash have not completely been deleted. If you double-click the trash, the contents are displayed. You can restore the files that have been accidentally moved to the trash. If you want to completely delete the contents of the trash, right-click the "Trash" icon and select "Empty Trash bin".

Tip

File manager is an application which corresponds to Windows Explorer. A file manager called Konqueror is supplied with Turbolinux FUJI. By using the file manager, you can move folders (or directories), copy or delete files through simple operations with a mouse.

My Documents

Double-clicking this icon starts the file manager to display the contents of the "MyDocument" folder.

Tip

The instance of the "MyDocument" folder is a "MyDocument" folder in the home folder. For example, if you log in as a user named taro, the "MyDocument" folder locates in /home/taro/MyDocument.

Linux Network

Use this icon to access Linux machine on the network. When you access the Linux machine, the SSH (Secure Shell) server starts and you must have an account to log in to that host. Turbolinux FUJI also contains the SSH server, which can be started from service settings of the control center. See Chapter 5 for details on the control center.

Windows Network

Use this icon to access the Windows shared folder located on the network.

My Computer

Use this icon to display the devices recognized by Turbolinux FUJI. You can access the CD-ROM or floppy disk from here. See Section 3.5 for details.

Obtaining License

Use this icon to start a screen on which to obtain and register the license file for Turbolinux FUJI. If you enter the serial number of the product and your e-mail address and click the [Send] button, the license file will automatically be obtained and registered. And the license file will be delivered to the e-mail address entered. You must obtain a license file and register it before using the Turbolinux FUJI package management tool "Turbo Plus."

Print jobs

Use this icon to display the status of the print job that has been sent to the printer. You may want to cancel the print job if you have sent the wrong data to the printer. In such a case, you can use the Print status to cancel the job that has been sent.

3.3.2. Panel

The following strip-like area displayed at the bottom of the desktop is called a panel.

Menus and icons to start applications are registered on this panel. There are also small programs that run on the panel called applets. The task bar or the clock described below is one of these applets. The panel can be folded and placed in the corner of the desktop by clicking on the right end of the panel.

Buttons and applets that are registered on the panel of Turbolinux FUJI are as follows:

Menu

Menu corresponds to the Windows' "Start" menu. Clicking this button displays the menu, from which you can start various applications and configuration tools. The frequently used applications are automatically registered on the upper part of the menu. See Chapter 4 for available applications.

Web browser

Clicking this button starts Firefox, which is contained in Turbolinux FUJI as a default Web browser. When starting up, a Web page is displayed from which to access various services provided by Turbolinux. To move to the linked page, the system must be connected to the Internet.

Mail client

Clicking this button starts Thunderbird, which is contained in Turbolinux FUJI as a default e-mail client. When starting up for the first time, a wizard to set the mail account appears.

My Documents

This is the same as the [My document] icon on the desktop. The file manager starts and display the contents of the "MyDocument" folder (/home/user name/MyDocument/).

Task bar

Indicates which application is currently running. Clicking the application activates its window. You can use this to move the window hidden behind to the front-most when multiple windows are open. Or you can also use it to display the minimized window on the desktop again. Operations such as "Minimize," "Maximize," "Close," or "Move desktop" can be selected by right-clicking application buttons.

Clipboard

It is a utility called Klipper to save the copy of the text selected on the desktop and paste it on another application. To display the history of the copy, click the [Klipper] icon.

Select the text that you want to paste from the displayed history. To paste the text, click the center button of the mouse. When a two-button mouse is used, the same operation as with the center mouse button is performed by clicking the right and left buttons at the same time.

Turbo Alert

Turbolinux FUJI has the features such as software update notification and automatic updating. Turbo alert checks whether there exists a updated package in the Turbolinux update site and notifies of the result through this icon. See "Turbolinux FUJI Configuration Guide" for details on the update tool.

Screen resize

Clicking this displays the menu to dynamically change the resolution of the desktop.

Clock

Indicates the current time. Left-clicking the clock displays the calender.

When right-clicking the clock, the following menu appears. You can also change the type of the clock or adjust the current time. To change the settings related to the system such as adjusting the time, the password of the system administrator (root) is required.
