Chapter 2. Starting the Installer

2.1. Selecting an installation method

The most common way to start the Turbolinux installer is to boot from the "Install CD" inserted into the CD-ROM drive. Using the "Install CD", which is a bootable CD, you can easily start installation on a computer with a CD-ROM drive that supports CD boot. However, your computer may not support boot from the CD-ROM drive or have any CD-ROM drive at all. Boot from the CD-ROM drive is not supported, in particular, for some combinations of a laptop computer and an external CD-ROM drive. This is rarely a problem for a desktop computer or a laptop computer with an internal CD-ROM drive. You can proceed to Section 2.2 and start installation. However, you may need to modify the BIOS configuration to change the order in which boot devices are searched.

If you cannot start the installer from the CD-ROM drive, you can boot from floppy disks instead. Booting from floppy disks will allow the installer to recognize many CD-ROM drives, allowing you to use these CD-ROM drives. In this case, you need to create install disks before installation. For more information on types of install disks and how to make them, see Appendix C.

The installer supports installation from media listed below to enable installation of Turbolinux FUJI on a computer not equipped with a CD-ROM drive. To use these installation methods, you need to make install disks before installation.

Table 2-1. Other media types

Media typeOverview
Local hard diskCopy the "Install CD" to the local hard disk of a computer on which you want to install Turbolinux and use it as source of installation. This method can be used if the content of the "Install CD" can be copied to other partition than the one on which Turbolinux is to be installed.
NFSUsing NFS, install Turbolinux over a network. Copy the "Install CD" to a system that runs NFS server and export the directory to which it has been copied. The computer on which Turbolinux is to be installed will use the exported directory as source to start the installer. This method can be used if there is another system that can run NFS server and the exported directory is accessible. Also, you need to be familiar with NFS server settings.
FTPUsing FTP, install Turbolinux over a network. Copy the "Install CD" to a system that runs the FTP server and disclose the directory to which it has been copied. The computer on which Turbolinux is to be installed will use the disclosed directory as source to start the installer. This method can be used if there is another system that can run the FTP server and the disclosed directory is accessible. Also, you need to be familiar with FTP server settings.

Note

You need not use any of these installation methods if you can start the installer from the CD-ROM drive.

If you use either of these installation methods because you cannot start the installer from the "Install CD" inserted into the CD-ROM drive or the computer does not have a CD-ROM drive, see Appendix C.
