5.2. Overview of Setting Modules

The control center contains a lot of setting items. Some setting items not only change appearance of the desktop but also affect behaviors of the desktop or system. User can freely change settings and customize the behavior of the desktop. Normally, it is recommended to use it with default settings of Turbolinux FUJI. This section briefly describes frequently-used setting screens.

5.2.1. Printers

Printers

Used to set printer settings. Turbolinux FUJI supports automatic detection of local printers directly connected to the PC or printers on the network, allowing the user to easily set printers by following instructions in the wizard. To start the setting wizard for adding printers, select [Add printer/class] from [Add].

5.2.2. Basic Settings

Panels

Used to change the position and size of the panel.

KUser

Used to start the user management tool. Users or groups can be added or deleted by using this tool.

Password & User Account

Use this setting module to change the password of the user who has logged in. You can change the password by clicking the [Change Password...] button.

Login setting

Used to set the appearance of the login screen and its behavior. The standard setting of Turbolinux FUJI allows the general user created by the installer to automatically log in to the system. If you want to disable automatic login, uncheck the "Enable Auto-Login" check box in the [Convenience] tab and click the [Apply] button.

5.2.3. Screen Settings

Window Decorations

Used to change the appearance of the window frame.

Theme Manager

Used to set the settings relating to appearance of the desktop. Settings for wallpaper, color, icon, font, and screen saver can be changed. The changed appearance can be saved as a new theme.

Display

Used to change resolution or set the power saving function if Display Power Management Signaling (DPMS) is supported by your display. DPMS is sometimes referred to as "Energy Star".

5.2.4. Internet

Network settings

Used to set the network interface to connect your server to the LAN or Internet, such as the host name, domain name, default gateway, DNS server, IP address, or use of DHCP server. In addition, settings of the wireless LAN card, PPPoE connection, and dial-up connection can be performed from this module.

5.2.5. Sharing Settings

Windows Network

Used to set the setting to access Windows shared folders. The user name and password that you are prompted to enter when accessing shared folders on the Windows network used with Turbolinux FUJI can be set beforehand.

File Sharing

With Turbolinux FUJI, folders can be instantly published as shared folders from the file manager. Using this module, you can enable/disable shared folder function, and limit functions of shared folers that are provided to the users, such as whether to provide simple or detailed functions of shared folder.

5.2.6. System Administration

License

Used to obtain and register the license file for Turbolinux FUJI. If you enter the serial number of the product and your e-mail address and click the [Send] button, the license file wil automatically be obtained and registered to the system. And the license file will be delivered to the e-mail address entered. Please retain the obtained license file. The license file must be registered before using TurboPlus.

TurboPlus

TurboPlus is a new package management tool which has been implemented in Turbolinux FUJI. A package in this context means a Turbolinux FUJI software distribution format. TurboPlus has the following functions:

  • Deleting the package from the system

  • Installing the package from the "Installation CD" or FTP site

  • Updating the package

  • Purchasing the plug-ins

  • Creating shortcuts on the desktop

Tip

Plug-ins are applications separately provided from Turbolinux FUJI. Various plug-ins for business use or home use that run on Turbolinux FUJI are scheduled to be provided. Free plug-ins and commercial plug-ins are available. With commercial plug-ins, you can easily purchase, download, and install them by using TurboPlus. User can introduce only the necessary plug-ins to extend the Turbolinux FUJI functions.

Caution

The license file must first be registered in the "License" of the control center before using TurboPlus.

Service

Used to start/stop services. Furthermore, setting of services that start on Turbolinux FUJI startup as well as startup settings by security levels are also possible.

Boot Loader

Used to set the boot loader. You can easily switch the default operating system to start up when a dual boot environment has been set up.

bootdisk tool

Used to create a floppy disk or a CD-ROM to start up the installed Turbolinux FUJI. The boot disk can be created during installation of Turbolinux FUJI. If you have not created the boot disk, create it to prepare for the case when Turbolinux FUJI could not start due to any failures.
